ミシガンビールレポートVol.1
Recently, when I went home to America for the winter holidays, I was able to see firsthand some developments in the craft beer scene.
The first thing I noticed was the scale of craft beer in the U.S. compared to Japan. With over 3,000 breweries active throughout the country, and at least one new brewery opening every day, craft beer can be found everywhere, from convenience stores to supermarkets, to specialty beer shops and brewpubs.
Some of these specialty shops carry several hundred varieties of beer from around the world. Whereas in Japan I am often familiar with every type of beer offered by some shops, it is almost impossible to try everything, much less decide on what to take home!
In many cases, regional beers dominate the available selection. My home state of Michigan has over 150 breweries, and I was able to sample some of the offerings from Michigan’s best brewers such as Founders Brewing Company, Bell’s Brewery, and Short’s Brewing Co.
One final note: prices. While some specialty beers have some hefty price tags, most beers are available at prices between 150 and 250 yen per bottle. This affordable price makes it easy to sample a much larger variety of beers in your quest to find a beer perfect for you.
この冬、母国のアメリカに帰った際、現地のクラフトビール事情を調査できました。
久しぶりに帰国した自分がまず驚いたのは、クラフトビール市場の規模でした。
ブルワリーを3,000ヶ所以上持ち、少なくとも1日1ヶ所のブルワリーがオープンしているペースのアメリカでは、クラフトビールはコンビニやスーパーのほか、ビール専門店やブルーパブで、どこでも簡単に入手できる品です。
特にビール専門店では、数百種類の世界各地のビールが揃っているのは珍しくありません。
日本でクラフトビールを扱っているお店が販売している、全ての種類のビールを飲み尽くしたことがある自分でも全てを試すのはとても不可能な任務でしたが、ビール精神をもって頑張りました！
故郷のミシガン州ではブルワリーが150ヶ所以上存在していますが、中でも評判の高いFounders Brewing CompanyやBell’s BreweryそしてShort’s Brewing Co.のビールを中心に嬉しく飲み比べました。
こういった規模の大きさの他にもう一つ気づいたのは、値段のことです。限定品や特殊なものを除いて、絶品クラフトビールでも一本150円～250円程度で売られています。
このような嬉しい価格では、手軽に様々なビールを試すことができて、自分に合う素晴らしいクラフトビールの探求をまさに楽しめました。
